"KID-SAFE" SEARCHING BASICS:  (Find more detailed information via major search engines)

NOTE: * Because engines in this category lose any safesearch feature when transferring to external links - some entries below are non-hyperlinked items - and are provided for supervisors to activate & preview.   Since extended previews found links to external unfiltered search engines - activated links need siteblockers to be installed to disable those sites (see tools below). Standard procedures indicate that each child should be supervised and have guardian/parent approval to access the Internet - See
Online Safety Contracts - via PureSight.  Confirm Terms-TOS-Legal notices for each site. See How To Guide to activate links below.
On dedicated kid's computers - here is an easy way to keep kids safe:   Via Tools-Options-Home Page:   type in the URL for The U.S. Government's Official Web Portal for Kids - Next step would be to use F-11 key for full screen to block access to search box - or see Full Screen Mode below (in Tools Section).   To complete this setup, it is important for educators to know that Yahoo® which prohibits users under 18 - is currently the default search engine in FireFox.   It can be deselected in Firefox Tools-Options-Search along with other engines which could link back to it - including Wikipedia.   Then some non-search engine (like a dictionary) could be added:   See Featured Extensions: Add-ons for Firefox.   Final note:   some items below work fine by first installing "Block site" below (and typing: *.yahoo.* plus other search engines which are unfiltered) . Using the whitelist function in "Block site" would exclude all sites except the ones you allow.
