Supervisory Practices That Foster Quality Teaching and Student Learning

This session will examine how focused, traditional and unique supervisory practices can promote both quality teaching and student learning -- making these "the centerpiece" of the schoolhouse.  Traditional supervision, "leading and learning while wandering around," management by wandering around, classroom snapshot, faculty meetings, and job embedded learning will be examined as "tools" to promote these outcomes.  This session will also examine significant bodies of knowledge that impact quality teaching and student learning including the "5 Theaters of the Mind" (B. Given), Powerful Teaching Strategies (R. Marzano, et al.), and features of quality work.  Participants will leave the session having experienced the techniques being addressed and with resources they can apply immediately.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • examine a variety of supervisory practices that promote quality teaching, a collaborative learning community, and student learning
  • develop a description of quality teaching and identify practices that contribute to achieving this outcome
  • analyze the relationship between student work, student engagement, and achievement
  • identify how faculty meeting activities and job embedded learning experiences for staff members can enhance teaching practices and student learning
  • generate a list of strategies that can be employed to make quality teaching and student learning the centerpiece of the school
  • reflect upon personal next steps
