How to Promote Research Based Teaching Practices

This session will provide opportunities for participants to explore how the brain learns and what the implications are for designing lessons, delivering the curriculum and assessing learning.  They will also review nine teaching strategies linked with fostering student achievement and ten design activities critical to work prescribed for students.  Finally, participants will analyze how faculty meetings, “management by wandering around” and peer coaching can be used to promote brain compatible, research based teaching practices and quality work for students.  Each participant will leave the session with a handout of resources that can be used immediately.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Examine how the brain processes information.
  • Explore the role of emotions in the learning process.
  • Discuss nine teaching strategies linked with fostering student achievement.
  • Analyze ten design qualities critical to work prescribed for students.
  • Identify how “management by wandering around” and faculty meetings can be used to promote research-based teaching practices and build positive collaborative school cultures.
