This session will provide participants with a definition of peer coaching, an overview of peer coaching structures, an explanation of how it forges meaningful connections among staff members who may otherwise experience professional isolation, as well as a detailed list of benefits peer coaching can produce, including staff and student learning. The goal of peer coaching is to promote meaningful dialogue among professional colleagues. The focus of this dialogue can encompass a variety of topics, including instructional approaches, curriculum development and delivery, assessment approaches, student work, problem solving and professional sharing, to mention a few. As a result of peer coaching, the culture of the school becomes more collaborative, curriculum is articulated, instruction and assessment become a shared enterprise, and adult and student learning soars. Research on effective schools highlights these attributes as critical to fostering greater student achievement.
Every participant will leave the session having experienced peer coaching activities in a non-threatening, supportive environment. A practical handout of peer coaching activities will be provided.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- examine a definition of peer coaching
- construct a rationale for peer coaching and professional collaboration
- review a variety of forms peer coaching can take
- analyze critical considerations for peer coaching success
- practice peer coaching activities
- reflect upon personal next steps
