This session will provide an overview of how the brain processes information and the implications for supervising instruction, conducting meetings and promoting the professional growth of others. Participants will explore the sensory memory, short term memory (and how to enhance it), and the long term memory.
The session will also focus on the role of emotion in leadership action. While personal styles of superb leaders vary, the most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as "emotional intelligence" (Goleman). Participants will have the opportunity to learn about five domains of emotional intelligence and their implications for leadership. Each person will leave the session with a handout of resources they can apply immediately.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- identify the functions of the sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory and their implications for leadership behaviors
- participate in experiments that shed light on how to generate and sustain attention
- analyze five domains of emotional intelligence and their role in fostering exemplary leadership
- reflect upon personal next steps
