In 2004, the hijacking of the title of "Christian" by a right-wing minority has become more blatant. This group is much more attuned to the worldly success of the Republican Party than to Holy Writ . Unfortunately, the Washington Post has cooperated in this hijacking. Your summary article "In 2004, Christians Stood at Front Lines," is an especially egregious example. It ignores the millions of Christians in this country whose reading of scripture and devout churchgoing practice leads them to the "front lines" to put concern for the poor over tax cuts, to seek to be peacemakers, and to refrain from "casting the first stone" on sexual morality. Later this month, the only modern U.S. Christian clergyman with a genuinely international reputation (including a Nobel prize) will be honored with a national holiday. This man, Rev. King, was called "a communist agitator" by many of the conservative political operatives who now claim the exclusive right to Christianity -- a faith which they use to seek power, but for which he gave his life.
