Some Social Justice Websites
Directories and Lists
- The Institute for Global Communcations, whose component networks include PeaceNet, EcoNet, ConflictNet, LaborNet, and Womensnet, provides links to a wide range of progressive organizations, as well as information on its own services. Once upon a time, it was my Internet provider.
- Macrocosm USA is an ambitious effort to list peace, environmental, health and justice resources in a searchable database.
Stuff Social Justice Oriented Folks Can Use or Consume or Be Helped By
- Tom Tomorrow, If you don't know this cartoonist, you're in for a knowing laugh. Unless you are a humorless conservative, or you don't like smart-aleck penguins.
- Black Commentator provides fresh anti-racist and progressive commentary, from an African-American perspective, every week.
- Organizing -- it's shorthand for making social change in a strategic and bold way. It works. One great place to connect to thought and action related to organizing is the Comm-Org site.
- You're white? Hey, so am I. But we don't have to stick to our assigned roles. Subscribe to a local newspaper published by people of color, and check out this website.
- A news source from the world of progressive blogs - Raw Story. Most of the blogosphere's progressive-leaning stories show up here pretty quick.
- National Organizers Alliance connects progressive organizers and strengthens our ability to do organizing well. Fun is also emphasized.
These Sites are Subversive
- Black Stripe is an information-packed web site by and for "same gender loving persons of African descent."
- Women's Action for New Directions does exciting and practical grassroots work for peace and empowerment.
- Mondragon is an exemplary community-based and cooperative economic development effort.
- Antipas Ministries is a fundamentalist Christian movement that dares to think through the implications of that faith, and to see who the Antichrist is. I don't agree with its theology, but I think it is vital to see that its perspective exists.
Some General Tools
- Alta Vista is the commercial service that I use when I am searching the whole Net. You may prefer some other one.
- The online Guardian, a newspaper from the UK/Great Britain, is a pretty good news source, especially if your main source is a mainstream paper or TV station in the US.
- If you need to complain about spam or something else to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, here's the place.
- Until things get a whole lot better, each US citizen should write to her or his Senators and House of Reps. member at least once a month. It does matter. Everything you need is here at Thomas.
- Red Rock Eater? It's hard to explain. But if you want to really understand the Internet technically and politically, start here. Also a place to connect to some rigorous and unexpected thinking.
- CTCNet unites grassroots community technology centers around the nation. High tech at the grassroots.
Sites with Links or Other Connections to This One
These sites are ones that have chosen to link to this one in the past, and that also have many other links worth checking out. Several of them are the sites of friends, acquaintances, or organizations that I have worked with or for.
- The Virginia Organizing Project is one of a number of powerful and effective statewide multi-issue organizations that is building people's power around the country. I am proud to consult for this organization, which does excellent work in my home state.
- The National Low Income Housing Coalition was my place of work from 1988 to 1995. I left there as Director of Field Services. The NLIHC, founded by Cushing Dolbeare, who recently passed away, has been a key voice for low income housing needs for two decades, and in 1999 hired a dynamic President, Sheila Crowley.
- Sojourners Online is the site of a powerful spiritual force, the progressive fundamentalist magazine Sojourners. For those who believe that a powerful anti-racist and anti-elitist message is inconsistent with prophetic evangelical Christianity, here's a place to get educated otherwise.
- They call it the Best Links in Cyberspace. On the site of the Liberty Underground of Virginia.
