Stupid Little 10 Miler and 5K
Saturday 22 March 2008 - Watermelon Park, near Berryville, VA

LAST MINUTE STUFF
Below are some notes about the race and some last minute instructions, although there's really nothing earth-shattering here. We've just put this together to give you an idea of what things will be like on Saturday. Remember, this is a low-budget, minimally-staffed race! So don't get your expectations too high, okay? That's why we called this the "Stupid Little 10 Miler & 5K".

WEATHER REPORT
As of the wee hours of Saturday morning, the National Weather Service's forecast for race time calls for cloudy skies and a 30% chance of rain, with a start time temperature of 37° going up to around 40° by the time we're done. Here's hoping the rain holds off!

WANNA VOLUNTEER?
While we think we have the basics covered, we can always use an extra warm body or two to serve as volunteers on race day. If you're interested, contact race director Karsten Brown at karsten@shentel.net or (540) 635-1773! (Volunteers should show up at the park by about 7:30 AM, or earlier if you want to help with registration.)

Pencils!

DRIVE CAREFULLY
Sunrise isn't until 7:11 AM on race morning, and although the sky will be brightening earlier than that, you still may be driving to the race in the dark. So drive safely and watch out for deer!

PARKING
You'll likely be parking in a grass field on the north side of the road opposite the main park entrance. Look for a yellow "PARKING" sign or two.

RACE DAY REGISTRATION
Race day registration will be from about 7:01 to 7:49 AM. At the registration table, you'll get a bib number, some pins, and your souvenir Stupid Little 10 Miler & 5K pencil (available while supplies last). (We'll also have a very limited supply of complimentary Road ID gift certificates; you're welcome to take one if you actually plan to use it.)

IF YOU'RE PREREGISTERED
All you gotta do is check in at the registration table and get your race number & pencil!

YOUR BIB NUMBER
...should be worn somewhere on the FRONT of your person! Race officials will need to see your number both at the turnaround and at the finish line. Also, be sure you've filled in your name, age, and gender on the bottom tag.

BATHROOMS
We will have two porta-johns available. Lines will develop as race time draws closer, so show up early!

NEW RULE: NO HEADPHONES  New!
For reasons of both insurance and safety, we are asking runners to leave their iPods and headphones in their cars or at home. (The F.A.Q. page has an explanation of this new rule.) We will be disqualifying anyone seen running the race with headphones-- whether the headphones/earbuds are in or out of the ears when spotted. We really don't want to have to DQ anybody, though, so please be good and don't wear headphones on Saturday, okay?

THE START
Unless there's a major snafu, we intend to start both races exactly on time (7:59 AM for the 10 miler, 8:09 AM for the 5K). So if you're running the 10 miler and you're in one of the porta-johns at 7:59, you'll be starting late! We'll be doing pre-race announcements a couple minutes before the start of each race, then there will be a countdown.

AFTER THE START, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN!
The only volunteers out on the course will be at the water stop and at each race's turnaround point. So basically, you're on your own out there! It's like any training run you would do-- pay attention, watch your footing, stay out of the way of traffic, etc.

TRAFFIC
The rural roads on which you'll be running, while generally very lightly travelled, are completely open to traffic, and most of 'em are narrow. If a car is coming, get out of its way. (Duh!) Be especially vigilant when approaching blind curves, of which there are a few out there.

COURSE MARKINGS
Both courses will be well-marked, with each mile marked and with turns noted by little orange surveyor's flags and arrows drawn in the road with flour. The courses are out-and-back routes and are not hard to follow at all. The 5K has no turns (just a turnaround at the halfway point), while the 10 miler has three left turns on the way out and three right turns on the way back. If you intend to get lost, you will have to make a very determined effort!

WATER STOP (10 miler only)  Updated!
It looks as though we'll only have enough volunteers to offer one water stop in the 10 miler this year. 10 milers will pass it twice, near mile 3 and again near mile 7. If you'll need water more frequently than that, you'll want to bring a bottle with you. (If by some miracle we're able to add another water stop, we'll update this page.)

UPDATE: There's a chance we may be able to offer a second water stop, although it will depend on how many volunteers show up on Saturday morning. So we won't know 'til then.

EMERGENCIES
We won't have professional on-site medical assistance available, unfortunately. There will be a first aid kit at the 10 miler water stop and at the start/finish area if you need minor patching up.

WHEN YOU FINISH
...make sure your bib number is visible as you approach the finish line! Once you cross the line and enter our makeshift chute, stay in the order in which you finished until a volunteer removes the tear-off tag from your number. Then you're free to head off to get refreshments, cool down, etc. You're welcome to jog back out on the course and meet up with a friend or relative who is still running, but please, please do not cross the finish line a second time!

This year's cheesy 5K age group certificate

REFRESHMENTS
We'll have water, bananas, and glazed donuts on a table near the finish line.

AWARDS
We're planning on handing out the 5K awards around 8:45-8:50 AM or so, and we'll try and hand out the 10 miler awards around 10:00 AM (maybe slightly earlier if we can get the results compiled quickly). (For those of you who don't think you'll be finished by the time your race's awards ceremony is supposed to start, don't worry, we'll give you your award when you do finish! We're not trying to rush you.)

THANK A VOLUNTEER
Be sure to offer your thanks to our crew of volunteers, as this event couldn't be held without 'em! This year's crew will likely include Kyra Brown, Dan Broznak, Nancy Bullock, Bob Gurtler, Sam Kertzman, Doug & Ramona Morris, Chris Northrup, Nancy Specht, and Carter Wiecking, along with co-directors Karsten Brown and Terry Leckie.

RESULTS
We'll try and get 'em posted here on the site as soon as we can-- hopefully within a couple days of the race!
